Russian to English Translator

“After all, science is essentially international.”
— Maria Skłodowska-Curie

I am a professional translator from Russian to English, specializing in scientific and technical texts. A native English speaker with eight years of full time translation experience, I have developed expertise in the fields of chemistry, pure and natural sciences, clinical trials, and petroleum.

In addition to freelance experience, I spent over three years working at a Fortune 500 engineering company, providing translation support for their Russian oil and gas projects. I also spent a year at a translation agency in Moscow, Russia, where I worked alongside a lawyer and legal translation expert.

Services and Rates

  • Translating written Russian text into English
  • Editing (full dual-language review/revision)
  • Proofreading (monolingual review)

I use memoQ translation memory software. It is fully compatible with Trados, WordFast, and Star Transit. I can export into an XLIFF file, a Trados-compatible bilingual file, or a rich text format two-column file, and I can also import and send translation memory files in TMX format.

Since each text involves a different level of difficulty and may require differing levels of background research, my rates vary depending on the source text, subject matter, file format, and deadline. Please contact me (amy(at) for a free, no-obligation quote. I will need to see the source text before committing to the project; confidentiality is guaranteed.

Also, please be aware that I am not the cheapest translator out there. Although I would be happy to discuss rates and deadlines with any potential client, I don’t haggle over my prices. Because of my education and experience, I have chosen to focus on scientific and technical translation. These fields require a unique combination of scientific and linguistic skills. If you are looking for a cheap, quick-and-dirty translation, I’m probably not the translator you’re looking for. (These aren’t the droids you’re looking for… Move along.)

Services I don't provide:

  • English to Russian translation
  • Ukrainian or other Slavic languages other than Russian
  • Interpreting (spoken)
  • PEMT (post editing of machine translation)

Fields of Expertise

My education started with science: I earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (summa cum laude) in 1999. I have translated scholarly journal articles on chemistry, biology, and mathematics. I’ve also translated texts on applied science, such as fungicide test reports and descriptions of polymer films for photovoltaic cells.

When I tell people I have degrees in Russian and Chemistry, they sometimes joke, “Wow, TWO foreign languages!” It’s true: scientific language and style are different from everyday language, and only someone with my education and experience can provide quality translations for scholarly texts.

In recent years, my focus has shifted more and more toward the pharmaceutical industry. I have translated laboratory test reports, preclinical studies, and doctor- and patient-facing texts. For clinical trials, I have translated regulatory submissions and meeting minutes, informed consent forms, investigator’s brochures, subject information sheets, and serious adverse event reports. My translations also include a medical doctoral dissertation on obstetrics, medical journal articles on cardiology, and literature reviews of clinical trials.

Oil and Gas

I spent over three years as a full time in-house translator at a Fortune 500 engineering company, supporting their Russian oil and gas projects. Whether your text is related to the engineering, procurement, or legal aspects of your project, I can translate it using clear, industry-specific language.

I have translated all texts related to oil and gas EPCM projects:

  • terms of reference
  • technical specifications
  • project specific design codes
  • instruction manuals
  • inspection reports
  • test procedures
  • work plans
  • design calculations
  • contracts
  • procurement documents
  • government regulations

During the year I spent as an in-house translator in Moscow, I was fortunate enough to work with a Russian lawyer who specialized in legal translation. I attended a training on Russian to English legal translation, and benefited from close collaboration and extensive peer review under my mentor. I can accurately translate contracts, powers of attorney, and corporate constituent documents.

I am a native speaker of Russian who holds a PhD in comparative linguistics. I worked as a Russian-English-French translator in my young days and have been teaching at the college level for twenty-four years. From the first day I met Amy in 1997, she has been a willing partner in every academic endeavor, quick to volunteer, eager to learn, generous with her time and energy, and out-and-out fun to work with. Amy is one of those rare people who manifests the energy of a relentless workaholic, produces profoundly excellent results in all she undertakes, and still manages to be a sane, sensible, warm, and all-around wonderful human being. Amy does what she loves and she absolutely loves what she does. This is such a rare and ideal combination.
